Poem: It would be easy

The following piece was presented at Jersey City Writers’ literary event – Formation: A Night of Poetry. Please enjoy.

It would be easy to return to work
seduced by material reward
to accept another’s dream
for money and favor

Seduced by material reward
I pretend over lunch with friends
for money and favor
Seeking solace I slip away

I pretend over lunch with friends
I tarry during afternoon tea
Seeking solace I slip away
for a fling with poetry

I tarry during afternoon tea
Wild berries sweeten my appetite
For a fling with poetry
Each time I practice I rise higher

Wild berries sweeten my appetite
Days I spend with this foreign method
Each time I practice I rise higher
A nagging voice urges me back

Days I spend with this foreign method
I yearn for public praise
A nagging voice urges me back
It would be easy to return to work
